The SEED School of Maryland is a statewide, public, college-preparatory boarding school that opened in August 2008. The School has enrolled 400 students in grades 6-12. The SEED School is an extraordinary educational opportunity for students across the state to receive a tuition-free, college-preparatory, boarding education.

The SEED School of Maryland combines a rigorous and engaging academic curriculum with life skills and enrichment activities to provide students with a balanced learning and living experience. Students and their families commit to a seven-year educational program that offers small class sizes, high quality teaching and learning experiences, mentoring, community service, and extracurricular activities such as sports and arts. Position Summary:

The Art Teacher is responsible for delivering high-quality visual arts instruction that fosters creativity, critical thinking, and artistic expression in students. The teacher develops and implements a standards-based curriculum that accommodates diverse learning styles and abilities while integrating art history, cultural appreciation, and interdisciplinary connections. The Art Teacher plays a key role in promoting a positive, inclusive learning environment where students explore materials, techniques, and their unique voices through the visual arts.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Design and implement engaging lesson plans aligned with state and national art standards.
  • Teach various artistic techniques, including drawing, painting, sculpture, printmaking, and digital media (if applicable).
  • Foster students’ creative development, visual literacy, and appreciation for the arts.
  • Differentiate instruction to meet the needs of diverse learners, including students with IEPs and English language learners.
  • Integrate art history, cultural studies, and cross-curricular content into lessons.
Classroom Management & Student Engagement
  • Create and maintain a safe, respectful, and organized studio/classroom environment.
  • Establish routines, procedures, and expectations for responsible use of art materials.
  • Promote collaboration, critique, and reflection among students in a constructive manner.
  • Manage behavior and encourage positive social interactions.
Assessment & Evaluation
  • Assess student progress through rubrics, portfolios, performances, and written reflections.
  • Provide timely, constructive feedback to students and communicate progress to families.
  • Maintain accurate records of attendance, grades, and behavior.
School & Professional Responsibilities
  • Display student artwork throughout the school and coordinate exhibits or community showcases.
  • Participate in faculty meetings, parent-teacher conferences, and school-wide events.
  • Collaborate with other teachers to support interdisciplinary learning.
  • Stay current with developments in visual arts education through professional development.

Requirements:

Required Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Art Education, Fine Arts, or related field.
  • Valid state teaching certification in Visual Arts (K–12 or specific grade band).
  • Strong classroom management and organizational skills.
  • Proficiency in a range of traditional and contemporary art media.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience teaching in a diverse, inclusive school environment.
  • Familiarity with digital art tools and platforms.
  • Bilingual or multilingual (if applicable to student population).
  • Experience with project-based learning, STEAM integration, or trauma-informed practices.
