The clinical Sport Psychologist performs in an interdisciplinary science that draws on knowledge from the fields of biomechanics, physiology, kinesiology and psychology. It involves the study of how psychological factors affect performance and how participation in sport and exercise affect psychological and physical factors. Sport Psychologists work with a comprehensive care team; addressing the entire spectrum of athlete wellbeing to enhance their personal, social, emotional, academic and athletic growth and performance. In addition to instruction and training of psychological skills for performance improvement, applied sport psychology also includes work with athletes, coaches, and parents regarding injury, rehabilitation, communication, team building, and career transitions. The Sport Psychologist is involved in the following professional activities: This position will work with Division I athletes at Southern Utah University and will work full time on campus in Cedar City, Utah. The provision of individual and group psychological services to a diverse athlete population presenting with a broad range of diagnoses and concerns including psychological, medical, social, developmental, or other difficulties that interfere with athletic success, the design, execution, and evaluation of psychoeducational programming for the professional partners and teams; the implementation of individual and team-based performance enhancement interventions and administrative activities to support the Sport Psychology program. Job Essentials: Comply with federal, state, local, and clinical practice/facility standards. Provide care and treatment within the scope of the Mental Health Practice Act. Competent in both Sport Performance Enhancement and Counseling for Mental Health. Will understand the culture of varied partners and compliance to the different leagues and organizations; assimilating delivery of services to match the needs of the athletes and partners. Will work closely with interdisciplinary team; sports medicine physicians, athletic trainers, rehabilitation staff, sport nutrition, and strength and condition personnel. Participate in providing education to colleagues, patients, family, coaches, sport partners, and community. When supervising trainees or post-doctorates, will provide appropriate supervision that complies with Intermountain, partner institution and professional standards. Minimum Qualifications: Doctoral degree in Counseling or Clinical Psychology from an APA accredited Program and licensure as a psychologist within the state of practice. Evidence of outstanding skills in clinical assessment, psychotherapy, performance enhancement services with individuals and teams, crisis management, and consultation with coaches and administrators of sport programs. Demonstrated sensitivity to multicultural issues and proven ability to interact with diverse individuals and groups. Ability to provide supervision to psychologists-in-training. Strong communication and interpersonal skills. Ability to work independently and as a member of a multidisciplinary team. Ability to problem-solve, handle sensitive information and nuanced situations. A solid understanding of boundaries and professional ethics. Psychologist will adhere to all appropriate standards of practice outlined by the American Psychological Association, State Licensing Board, and Intermountain Healthcare. Preferred Qualifications: CMPC (Certified Mental Performance Consultant) through AASP (Association for Applied Sport Psychology). Five years of experience in providing mental health counseling and performance enhancement services to athletes and high-level performers. Completion of post-doctorate internship or fellowship in setting focused on Sport. Professional memberships in American Psychological Association Division 47 and Collegiate Clinical/Counseling Sport Psychology Association.
